The publication says its 15″ Ryzen 5 Surface Laptop has moderate backlight bleeding, DPC latency issues, and display flickering. Interestingly, Reddit users are reporting a multitude of different issues, many of them different from Notebook Checks’. Meanwhile, several users are reporting abnormally loud fans. This includes u/mancala24 with a Ryzen 7 Laptop 3, and u/Gernug with the Pro 7. Other issues with the Pro 7 appear to include wobbly kickstands and rattling noises. Meanwhile, several users are reporting that their 13.5″ i5 Surface Laptops are freezing consistently. This appears to happen primarily during charging. Laptop Mag said its SL3’s SSD was reaching speeds of 282.7, which is slow for its price range. Others say the device has sluggish WiFi out of sleep and strange resolution/screen issues.
A Return to Poor Quality Control?
While some of these sound like the quality control issues that have plagued the Surface line, it’s very early days. Users with issues are bound to report them, while those with none will stay quiet. The first few days of having a device are often when it’s most likely to be sluggish or buggy, given that it has to install updates, drivers, and more. So far, Microsoft has been quick to roll out software fixes, with a pre-release firmware update for the Pro 7 improving battery life and the Cortana speech experience. Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop 3 got some improvements to general reliability. With hope, users with serious issues will get fast replacements and a litany of updates. We’ll be keeping an eye on the situation to make sure none of these problems are widespread.
